Open Blasting BHO With Glass Tubes

Overview:

Open blasting is a process for extracting concentrated cannabis oil using solvents like butane. It involves specialized equipment and requires safety precautions. The extracted oil can be used for cooking, tinctures, and other cannabis consumption, but it can be dangerous if done improperly. Seek guidance from professionals before attempting this process.

When open blasting with glass tubes, it is best done outdoors in a well ventilated area. You can use fresh frozen, fresh, or dried plant material. Fresh frozen material gives the best gold colored wax, with a great smell. I found it best to freeze the butane cans before the process. I try to freeze everything for 24 hours. The whole extraction process will take about 24+ hours. About 1 hour of work time to start, and 1 hour of work time to finish.

Materials Used:

   (2x) Coffee Filters
56 grams of dried buds
(2x) Special Blue Butane – Butane – 420ml w/metal tips

Equipment:

  12” glass tube
4 Cup Pyrex Dish
Vacuum Chamber
Double Broiler
Toaster Oven
Iron Laboratory stand and 3 finger clamp (optional)

The Process:

You start by packing the tubes. Grind up your material into joint rolling consistency, and pack it into the tube. You can use a wooden dowel to press the material and compact it into the tube. You do not want it packed too tight. Once the glass extraction tube is filled use a clamp with (2x) unbleached coffee filters to seal the end. Place it in the freezer for 24 hours along with the butane.
After the material has been frozen setup your iron lab stand(if you are using one). Get your container to blast into. I use a 4 cup Pyrex dish. Clamp your glass tube on the lab stand above the Pyrex dish. Get your butane and place the tip on it best fitting the glass tube. Start blasting the butane through the glass tube, and set the clamp. I use the lab stand to hold everything together so I can stand back from the fumes. Once the flow slows to a stop I replace the can and continue with the 2nd. After this can all the wax should be out from the plant matter. You can test this by sticking your finger through the flowing butane and feeling if it is still sticky.
Now the double broiler method comes in to evaporate most of the liquid. I place the Pyrex dish into a small pan with hot water. This is done outside, and the hot water is replace once it has cooled. This can take about 30 mins if it is warm outside with 2 water changes. It should be a syrupy liquid at this point. From here I use the vacuum chamber to pull out as much butane with water if it has any. I vacuum it until I see no more liquid. From here I use a toaster oven at 200F for 30 mins to remove any water or butane the wax may have. Then back into the vacuum chamber it goes for a minimum of 24 hours.

The Result:

BHO Slab from Dude Grows "A 35g patty of BHO, make from “emdog”, grown outdoors."
A 35g patty of BHO, make from “emdog”, grown outdoors.
What remains in the Pyrex dish at this point should be finished wax. I warm it in the toaster oven to scrape with a razor blade onto Parchment paper or a silicone container. If you hear any abnormal noise when you dab/smoke this wax there is still water, or butane in it. It would need to go back through the toaster oven, and vacuum chamber.

Tips:

Fresher material yields lighter color wax.
It is best to use a vacuum oven if possible.
Avoid breathing any fumes.
Do not do this near outlets, or light switches.
There are many YouTube videos on this method. A video can be seen here going through the process.
